ABSTRACT. In diabetes, retinopathy constitutes a major complication by its evolution to blindness. 327 diabetic were recruited. 88 among them, with a duration of diabetes of at least five years, attended the ophtalmologic clinic for a fluoro-angiographic examination. In the same time, blood was withdrawn in order to determine HbA1c, serum triglycerides and cholesterol. The obtained results showed no correlation of retinopathy with either HbA1c or serum triglycerides. However, it appeared that hypercholesterolemia was associated to retinopathy (p<0.05; RR=1.76). So it would be necessary to systematize a periodic determination of serum cholesterol in the management of diabetes, overall in countries where accessibility to ophtalmologists is not easy.

ABSTRACT. HbA1c is an useful marker of glicemic control diabetic patients: several methods have been proposed for its assay. Immunochemical methods recently made available do not require dedicated instruments to measure HbA1c in blood samples. The purpose of this paper is to compare an immunochemical method implemented on a random access clinical-chemistry analyzer with a HPLC method largely used in the clinical laboratory. The evaluation included day to day and intra-run precision assessement, and method comparison using patient samples without any variant hemoglobin. HbA1c has also been comparatively measured in some additional samples from patients carriers of the variant hemoglobins S and C. Laboratory management aspects concerning the use of the Cobas Integra 400 analyzer, already available in the laboratory, are discussed.

ABSTRACT. Point of care instruments are particularly interesting nowadays because they provide faster results and allow the use of small amounts of blood. We performed this study in order to compare the new method (ESR PLUS) classified as "point of care test" (POCT) with the Ves-Matic technique. These 2 methods have also been compared with the ICSH reference method. We measured the erythrocyte sedimentation rate in 110 blood samples; each sample was analysed with the 3 methods. The data from method comparison studies were analysed by simple least squares linear regression method. The study shows a good correlation: a) between each of the 2 methods and the reference method and b) between the Ves-Matic method and the ESR PLUS method. The latter is therefore ideal for emergency laboratories and emergency wards.
